Why some of these have us shook and you should be too.
Okay, we all know that big businesses aren’t innocent, but who would have thought they would be capable of secrets that could physically harm users? Many of us, myself included, carry about our day normally after a regular daily beauty and makeup routine without thinking about what is actually going on our skin, and we buy foundation based on reviews and complexion/coverage without even looking at the ingredients of the product we use.
If more people knew about some of these secrets, many businesses would lose a hefty amount of revenue and people would start seeking other more natural and less harmful options. Let’s take a look at the top 10 secrets that the cosmetic industry does NOT want us to know about.
1.) All of those expensive anti-aging creams are complete BS.
Who woulda thunk? There are so many fancy face/neck/eye creams on the market that cost anywhere from $5 to $500, and they all promise the same thing. Branding on these items are all over the internet, shopping centers, and even the most popular brands have commercials on TV featuring an A-list celebrity in their mid-40’s that got paid millions of dollars to say they use this cream to look flawless forever. Sadly, we are suckers and we believe it. These creams basically promote a face-lift in a 4-ounce bottle for $60. Every wrinkle, sun spot, and fine line will disappear.
FALSE. If you look at the fine print on the labels you will notice they only say the ‘appearance’ of wrinkles and fine lines will decrease, not the actual wrinkles. And as for eye cream, it’s just moisturizer that costs twice as much and is placed in a tiny tub.
2.) Then what does help with preventing early aging? What’s the secret?
Big shocker here: sunscreen. That is the secret potion that prevents early aging, wrinkles, fine lines, and sunspots. If the cosmetic industry told us that sunblock can do it all, they would be sh*t-outta-luck with trying to sell fancy eye creams.
Blocking powerful UV rays will ultimately stop 90% of your skin’s aging, and disturbingly enough only 1 in 10 Americans use sunscreen according to a public opinion poll.
3.) Animal testing is still a thing- and it’s horrifying.
There are places that have banned animal testing such as Europe, places that require animal testing like China, and places that are still struggling with cruelty-free laws like the United States. Famous brands that we hear of every day (Clinique, Dior, Maybelline, Victoria’s Secret, and Gucci to name a few) still practice animal testing on products to make sure it’s safe for humans- they still sell in hundreds of countries that have no ban against animal testing. If you didn’t know, animal testing isn’t just spraying a bunny with perfume. These animals are strapped down with their eyes help open as chemicals are dripped into them to see if it burns or causes severe deformities. Their skin is injected with compounds and applied topically. Animals die every day from these horrific acts.
4.) The word “fragrance” is used to hide whatever chemicals are causing the smell.
It is legal for cosmetic companies to use the word “fragrance” instead of listing the chemicals including that create the smell. Could you imagine that list? However, it’s not just used to sum up a large amount of chemicals, it is used to hide potentially dangerous compounds that we are allowing our skin to breathe in. An average of 14 chemicals in 17 household name-brand fragrances was discovered by The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
5.) The FDA is a government agency responsible for cosmetics- but it doesn’t mean anything.
If there is ever a problem with a product, the FDA shrugs it off and can’t remember signing off on it. Also, they don’t even review the products before they hit the market, which is why they can’t ever recall a product if there is an issue. In so many years they have only successfully banned roughly 12 toxic chemicals/compounds in everyday beauty products. In comparison, the European Union has banned over 1,300.
6.) Your beauty routine may contain formaldehyde.
Yes, formaldehyde, the chemical used to embalm dead bodies. IT might help the dead stay pretty longer, but the living reaps worse benefits- including cancer. There are low levels of formaldehyde found in almost every beauty product, from shampoos to lotion, and cause skin irritation, hair loss, and prolonged use can even lead to the growth of cancer cells.
7.) Water is actually your healthy best friend with beautifying properties…and it’s free.
Water gives life and is necessary for human survival. If you deducted every product that claimed to have ‘anti-aging’ or ‘rejuvenating/revitalizing’ properties, you’d be left with water because so many of those marketing slogans are a lie. You can’t package in a bottle the things that are best for your skin; O2 and H2O (oxygen and water). If you didn’t already know, our skin is the largest organ in the body and needs extra care. Drinking a lot of water every day naturally improves texture and color of your skin, hydrates it, and even clears spots and blemishes.
8.) Say goodbye to fancy and expensive stretch mark creams.
We all get them, and we should all embrace them. However, it doesn’t mean we love them. When these purple and dark red lines cover our stomach or anywhere else that has expanded, we reach for expensive oils that take a 6-week process or gels that most people don’t have excellent results with such as Maderma (which also has symptoms such as rashes, irritation, or allergic reactions.) Cocoa butter, coconut oil, castor oil, aloe vera, and potato juice are natural and cheap remedies that don’t have scary chemicals and work the same way that stretch mark creams do.
9.) Your mascara has a longer life than you think.
The life-span of mascara is three months! Don’t forget that. But unfortunately, whether mascara is cheap or expensive, it may dull out and become dry/clumpy after only a month. All you need to do to save money and revive your favorite mascara is to add a few drops of any saline solution to your tube and it’s like new.
10.) Ice, ice baby.
I mean, it’s water, but it’s frozen. What’s so neat about it? If you are having a heart attack about all the money you’ve spent on rejuvenating creams/scrubs/cleansers, I can understand why. A simple beauty hack that may be uncomfortable but also might put overnight creams out of business is simply rubbing ice on your face/neck. This easy trick, according to dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban, stimulates blood circulation and makes your skin glow. It only takes a few seconds!
